Special Economic Zones: Zone Social Responsibility Toolbox
for promoting inclusive and sustainable growth and investment in special economic zones and other economic development zones
The toolbox has been developed for policymakers, companies, zone managers, international organisations, analysts, researchers and other stakeholders with an interest in strengthening the social inclusiveness and sustainability of special economic zones (SEZs) and other economic development zones aimed at attracting foreign direct investment and spearheading industrial development.
Overview of the toolbox
Addressing the challenges faced by local communities living on or around SEZ land, who experience significant livelihood changes and are often dispossessed and moved from their land in the process of zone development.
Accommodating the needs of migrants who travel from afar to work in the SEZs and face challenges in adapting to local circumstances and integrating into local societies.
ZSR regarding employment and labour: Assuring decent labour conditions in the zones for both migrant and local workers.
Ensuring that the negative impacts on the environment and sustainability that frequently arise during industrial development are sufficiently mitigated during zone development and operation.
